Sei: The Natural State
In Reiki Jin Kei Do Sei is recognized as the natural state your mind should be. Unfortunately this is not the case as most of us are in the process of doing things and multi-tasking trying to accomplish many things in a limited time. This leads to distraction and dispersion of the energy of the mind from its natural state of tranquility, stability, focus, and concentration.
In Reiki Jin Kei Do Level II you can learn certain powerful symbols. One of which is has in its name the word Sei. This Symbol represents an ancient Mantra that creates a sense of Harmony and Tranquility in the mind. The Symbol when used correctly aligns the 4 upper Chakras creating a smooth flow of energy and brings the mind to a concentrated state. In this state of heightened awareness insights arise that can resolve any problems or challenging situations you may be encountering.

Mindfulness in Reiki Jin Kei Do
Mindfulness is not only a powerful technique to develop to enhance our life in daily life activities but more so in Reiki Jin Kei Do practice. I like to think of Mindfulness as “ Mind-Full”ness. What is the mind full of? The mind must be full of awareness. Our mind has the tendency to jump continually from past to future. We usually bring the past to the present moment as a reaction to an impulse from the external world through the five senses. Or we will create a thought about the future based on the past thought or thought process.
An example is you are walking along a street and you hear a song being played coming from a café on the roadside. The sound of the song brings to the mind a memory of a time you spent with your family. So a sound vibration with a particular pattern that entered your ear and interacted with your consciousness which you then perceived and matched with your past stored patterns of vibrations as a song and induced associated patterns to create the thought process about your time on a family trip. During this time, you were moving into the past experiencing the thought process in the present moment that in itself is rushing to become the immediate past.
So, we are constantly creating thoughts based on past patterns. Mindfulness as a practice helps us to become more aware of this process and trains us not to be carried away by the past information into unhealthy mental states. Again going back to the previous example, if you ran with the thought process unmindfully, and if you had had a bad experience during that family trip, you may suddenly feel a sense of sadness arise without even knowing why.
As we become more proficient with the technique of being aware of the mind and its activities, we can develop the strength to stop the process from leading us to an unwholesome mental state.
So how can mindfulness are used and be a great help in Reiki Jin Kei Do practice? First of all Reiki Jin Kei Do teachings emphasise the importance of mindfulness with its core teachings presented as the Reiki Jin Kei Do Ideals or Principles an expanded version of the Usui ideals. Also in the technique we learn called MindCheck we learn to first bring to focus or mental states retrospectively. Checking how the mind was the past 2 hour or 4 hours demonstrate to us the balance or unbalanced state of mind; harmonious, joyful, compassionate, generous, or with anger, sadness, annoyance etc.
As our mindfulness strengthens we are able to catch the mind moving to the past and dragging out negative processes. Then we have the power of choice to change that process. Reiki helps us in this process of transforming the mind from a negative process to a positive process.

My UK Visit (After 21 years)
It was after much deliberation that I decided to make the trip to UK this January. Running a business and a busy natural health practice makes it hard to take a holiday or go for a overseas visit when you wish.
Fortunately, I was able to organize staff and manage to take off for a little over 2 weeks.
The trip was made possible because of several people but mostly I must thank Dorothy and Gordon Bell to whom I taught Reiki on my second visit to UK in 1991 on my way to Australia to settle down. It was a wonderful trip in 1991 to New Castle upon Tyne to visit Gordon and Dorothy. My wife and I stayed for a few days with them teaching Reiki I and later Reiki II to a small group.
From this small group, Reiki Jin Kei Do practitioners and teachers have grown to a large number today. Faye Wenke who received Reiki trainig with me after I migrated to Australia and was also instrumental as she trained Sarah Varela.
Sarah's first experience was with me an is unforgettable to me as it was for her. Well that is another story. Sarah and Faye's teaching efforts in UK also created a large body of Reiki JKD practitioners. The recent effeorts by Steve Gooch, Reiki Jin Kei Do Master and author of the first Reiki Jin Kei Do book, to create a UK Reiki Jin Kei Do organization also supported my visit.
To many other wonderful masters including the newly initiated Nawel Van Lin (and husband Jean Pierre) who provided her house (and many cups of special coffee and tea and wonderful meals) to me for training two masters in their advanced Buddho training, I am most grateful.
It was a wonderful feeling to visit UK and New Castle after so many years and also to re-connect with so many Reiki masters and students from different parts of UK and sharing with them my experiences and listening to their life transforming experiences with Reiki Jin Kei Do.
Although it was difficult for me to be away from my wife and two children, it was important to connect with, support, and provided new insights gained through my own Reiki journey and life changing experiences with my Reiki Jin Kei Do family. I look forward to another visit next year if conditions are right. I truly feel that it is time for me to take a more active role in providing training and review workshops to the Reiki community worldwide. I believe Reiki will guide me in creating the conditions to achieving this goal.

What is Reiki Jin Kei Do?
Reiki Jin Kei Do is a way of using Reiki to develop compassion for ourselves and other beings who share this universe with
us. In order to develop compassion, we need a tool. This tool is our daily Reiki practice which includes meditation. Through our practice we are able to develop Kei (Wisdom) the other aspect of Jin (Compassion). To have true compassion one must be able to see through our own delusion, our inherent ignorant state of mind.
The meditation aspect enables us to penetrate this dull, delusionary state of mind and begin to see the true nature of our mind and body process as well those of other beings.
When we can experience the oneness of all beings, their suffering becomes ours and ours theirs. We are able to then understand the suffering of others. We can truly feel the suffering and pain and feel compassion for others.
So how does Reiki come into the picture? Reiki is a powerful tool to deeply experience the body. We can experience the body not only at the superficial level of energy but at deeper and deeper levels of energy through the regular use of Reiki on ourselves. Combining metta meditation (loving kindness), 6-point meditation, breath awareness, and Mind Check, we will be able to refine our awareness until we can feel the interaction of Reiki at different levels of the body.
Reiki treatments can easily place a person in a deep meditative state. While meditation enhances the awareness of Reiki flow, Reiki supports the mind to become more concentrated and refined in its own energy vibrations. Those who can attain jhana states (dhyana) can easily recognize the effect of Reiki in entering the jhanas and experiencing jhana factors (more in-depth analysis of the mind and Reiki will be discussed in a later article).
If we are able to practise daily and meditate regularly, we will very soon develop compassion and wisdom within ourselves. We will be able to see our ever-changing mind-body process and slowly let go of clinging to the body and mind as our own. We will be able to then have more compassion and treat ourselves kindly, be less critical or judgmental. In doing so we will also be able to feel and understand the pain and suffering of others, a universal characteristic of existence, and be capable of being kinder, less critical and judgmental, and more understanding towards others and their human nature. If by learning these valuable lessons in our own practice, we can integrate these experiences into daily life and start being kind and helpful to our immediate family, this would be the true use of Reiki Jin Kei Do.
It is not easy to change the world, the opinions, judgments, abuse, and general behaviour of others. However we can change our own mind and develop our own mind, opening our hearts to ourselves and to those closest to us and then slowly expand the circle. I hope that as true Reiki Jin Kei Do students we are able to be mindful each moment of the day, as the Reiki Jin Kei Do principles state, and to use our Reiki, our compassion and wisdom to benefit others.
In this day of internet communication we now have instant global connection. Therefore, it has become even more important to be mindful of living the principles in all that we do. Living the principles means being mindful of our mental state; is it wholesome, full of compassion, wisdom, understanding, non-critical, and non-judgmental; does it have metta, the feeling of friendliness and harmony; does it benefit the reader; is it full of wisdom and compassion; and is it truly productive?
As Reiki Jin Kei Do students this worldwide platform of communication has given us an even greater opportunity to express and reflect the teachings of Venerable Seji Takamori and his desire for us to play a role in the evolution of the planet.

Reiki Jin Kei Do in Daily Life
As Reiki Jin Kei Do practitioners we have a powerful tool to use on a daily basis. But how many of us really use this beautiful method on ourselves regularly. I know we are all very busy having a fast paced life multi-tasking everything. When something goes wrong we think of Reiki. So here is a simple exercise tha...t I do to somehow integrate Reiki and Meditation into your daily routine.
When you first wake up, sit on the edge of the bed. Bring your attention first to your feet touching the floor. Try to feel the sensations on your sole. Then do a quick scan of your body from head to toes. You can easily use the 6-point meditation technique (extended) to do the scanning. Bring your attention to the top of your head. Imagine you are now connected to the infinite source of energy and a stream of light is flowing from this field to your crown. Feel the pleasant tingling vibrations. Bring attention to the forehead imagining that the energy flowing to the crown is pouring from the crown to the forehead. Relax the crown and the forehead as the energy stream connects the two areas. Allow the stream of energy to flow from the forehead to the throat in the same way feeling the sensations as the energy flows down. Now follow the stream from the throat to the heart.
When you have the awareness of energy as a pleasant feeling around the chest, say “Let my heart be filled with Metta (loving Kindness, Universal Friendliness, and Harmony)”. Try to feel this emotion as a sensation in the heart. Now connect the feeling to your breathing. As you breathe in feel the energy of Metta saturate the heart chakra, expand spreading throughout the body. As you exhale, imagine the Metta energy flow down both arms to the palms. Feel the warmth, tingling, and any other sensations in the palm. Continue to do this Metta breathing for about 6 breaths. Then extend the 6 points to 9 points by placing your Metta activated palms on your thighs and feel the energy flow from the palm points to the upper thighs (points 7, 7). Then move your palms in a flowing brushing motion gently in contact with the thighs down to the knees (8,8) and as you bend forward continue the brushing stroke down to the feet ending with the palms covering the insteps(9,9). Repeat this exercise 3 times until you can really feel a pleasant feeling flowing as you brush the energy pathway from the upper thighs to the feet.
Now bring the energy activated palms up to your head placing them on the crown and feel the sensations and energy flow to the crown. Gently stroke backwards as if you are brushing your hair back all the way to the back of the neck. Continue the movement bringing the palms towards the front of the head stroking the ears, jaw and cheeks. Keep moving the hands in a gesture of washing the face (actually stroking the face gently) 3 times. Then bring the hands down from the face to the throat and continue down to the chest, ribs, and abdomen brushing down to the thighs and all the way to the feet ending the sequence.
If you do this I guarantee that you will feel vibrant and start your day with a beautiful state of mind with a compassionate heart.

The Reiki Jin Kei Do Principles-Deeper Understanding
Be mindful each moment of the day....what is mindfulness? How can we develop this ability of the mind so that we can apply mindfulness every moment of the day? Moment to moment mindfulness is really an "ideal" and takes long periods of training to attain. However, periodic mindfulness practice is achievable by everyone.
This is especially true for us Reiki practitioners. When we do Reiki we can practice our mindfulness. Mindfulness in Pali language is called Sati which means remembering.
This is remembering to bring the mind from the past or the future thoughts to the present moment. In Buddha's words Sati is not just ordinary Sati but Samma Sati one of the stages of the development of the Nobel Eight Fold Path to liberation or enlightment. Samma Sati is defined as the Right Mindfulness or the mindfulness with wholesome mental states as object. One can be mindful as a thief being very focused and fully aware of the present moment in his or her process of stealing. This is obviously not a wholesome mindful state. When we are aware of our mind and body process moment by moment with equanimity, then we can say we have Samma Sati; the true, pure, or right mindfulness.
Mindfulness is the process of remembering our path, the spiritual path, and when the mind wavers from this path to bring it gently back to the right path. This path is what I mentioned previously as the Nobel Eight Fold Path. I will discuss this in another article but for now let us say that thoughts that may cause harm to oneself and others do occur in our mind. When such thoughts arise if we can be sensitive to the process and can catch the thought process with the net of mindfulness we can not only let go of that thought process but prevent hurtful words and bodily actions from occurring. In meditation, we can be mindful of the body and sensations of the body as well as the thoughts which arise in relation to the body and sensations as well as from the deep database of memories. Mindfulness as a mental factor helps to monitor the process of the mind and keep the mind in a wholesome state.
As Reiki practitioners we have been given the gift of Reiki which makes us highly sensitive to the energy processes of the body. This heightened sensitivity of the mind to energy flow can be a powerful asset in developing mindful awareness. This can be used to become quickly aware of the negative effects of negative mental states on the body. When anger arises we can feel the buring feelings in the body. With Reiki we can become aware of this negative feelings in the body and transform theses sensations to harmonious sesnations with Reiki by placing our hands on the body or mentally directing reiki to the area of the body affected. When we practise like this whenever we feel negaive emotions creating negative feelings, we are training ourseves to be mindful of the body and sensations as well as using our gift of Reiki to transform our experience.
Eventually what we must realize is that the mind is a constantly and rapidly changing process within a immense field of energy, information, and consciousness. The body too is a process of energy which is in flux just like the mind and is part of the whole ocean of energy which we are a part. Whether we call this infinite sea of energy and consciousness REI, Quantume Field, Tao, Unified Field, or Divine consciousness, we can only experience it if we can let go of our little "I" "Me" and "Mine" and loosen our tightly bound body and mind, allow it to become porous and free to become boundaryless.
By developing mindfulness in simple and small steps we will be able to first see the changing nature of the body, the matter-energy process. As we develop the ability to keep the awareness on the body moment by moment without distraction, we will be able to first experience the usual sensations we feel as Reiki flowing in our body. For example if you were to focus your attention on your palm, you will soon feel the vibrations, heat, or other sensations we may associate with Reiki flow. If we can maintain our attention without wavering on this sensation, we will be able to experience the energetic qualities of the sub-atomic particle-wave characteristic and beyond which in Buddha's teachings we call the energetic qualities of Earth, Water, Fire, and Air, of matter-energy process of the hand as experienced by a concentrated mind. This is just the beginning of the path to the realm of REI.
With this experience strenghtening our mindfulness, we can start applying it into daily life situations, such as in work, with family and friends. This is the true test of mindful living. At least choose to spend 30 minutes a day of mindful living. Use the Mind Check technique to retrospectively observe your mind. Decide on 4 hour periods and check after the four hour time period how your mind was. Did you have unwholesome mental states such as anger, irritation, annoyance, sadness, anxiety, and depresion. What about the wholesome mental states? Have joy, compassion, generosity, friendliness, and contentment come into your mind during those four hours?
If not, make a resolution to spend the next 30 min, 1 hour, or 2 hours practising promoting wholesome mental states to arise. Do Metta meditation spreading loving kindness, universal friendliness and harmony to your colleagues, friends, family or whoever is close to you. Send a blessing to someone walking in front of you, hold the door open for someone, or do some small thing that will bring joy to another's heart such as a compliment. As the Principle states Be mindful so you can observe the root cause of the unwholesome thought whether it is anger, greed, delusion which are the roots themselves for other unwholesome thought processes.
I will explain these more in the next article.
Practise well...

Reiki Jin Kei Do and Vipassana - Some thoughts.
Reiki can be understood as Yoga or unification of the duality we experience in our daily experience. From a conventional reality point of view, Reiki is just another word to which people attach a meaning or meanings. From an ultimate view point, it is the interplay of mind and matter.
At least in Reiki Jin Kei Do (The Reiki way of integrating compassion and wisdom into daily life or life path), Reiki is not an external energy that we channel or depend on to heal. Reiki is the present moment reality we experience in our mind and body. As Reiki Jin Kei Do practitioners we use an awareness enhancing technique sometimes called an “attunement” to shift our awareness from the normal state (or distracted mind state pulled in many directions by the five senses as well as the mind’s own memory base and conditioned responses) to a more inner focused state of a heightened awareness.
This heighted awareness is developed through intention, attention, and sustained attention to the body (rupa) and feelings (vedana). As our mind becomes more concentrated or less distracted, we begin to experience the material reality of the body as an ever changing flow of energy. This energy we call Reiki is not a superior or an external force that we use but what is always present. This is true if we look at the same situation from a quantum physical view point.
In Reiki it is understood that we are not individual entities with a “self” but part of a process of ever-changing field of energy as consciousness, a field of energy as information, and a field of energy comprised of pure intelligence, wisdom and compassion.
As Reiki Jin Kei Do practitioners and teachers, all we are doing is deepening our awareness of the body and how the mind and body interact at superficial levels first and subsequently at deeper levels. As Reiki Jin Kei Do practitioners we focus on the brahma viharas in the treatment of a patient or client. The Brahma Viharas are the divine abodes of the mind. When our minds are in a state of Metta (loving kindness or universal friendliness), Karuna (compassion), Mudita (sympathetic joy), and Upekkha (Equanimity), the mind is dwelling in a divine state. The purpose of this is first to embrace the other human being in metta and in harmony, breaking the barrier between I and the other.
Then with karuna we have compassion for whatever suffering we ourselves have experienced in life as well as the client, understanding that Dukkha (sufferring, stress, dissatisfaction) is a reality and we all share this truth. Then we see that some action has to be taken out of compassion to help the being who needs help. The way we can attempt to help them is in this simple way of touch with compassion. Knowing also that the ultimate way of helping a being is to provide guidance to liberate from the cycle of life and death or Samsara.
But at this time we can touch with compassion, unconditionally. (Also, understanding that being a ordinary unenlightened human being, our actions are not 100% without the three roots, greed, anger, and delusion). Having the ability to help, we experience Joy and wish this joy for the client. Like this we develop Mudita and we can feel the meditative joy arise in our mind. Finally we focus on Upekkha and let go of any outcomes and attachments to the “healing” we did or the treatment we gave.
When a student is in retreat for Vipassana, one must place 100% attention to that technique and try to develop to the best of one’s ability. On the other hand at the deeper level of Reiki Jin Kei Do practice, Reiki is not an act of “doing” but a state of “being”. It is a deeper awareness of the mind and body. It is a practice of mindfulness.
So those who are Reiki Jin Kei Do practitioners when practising Reiki as an healing art, it may be perceived as “doing” something but underneath that process is a state of “being” or an awareness of the natural state of body and the flow of energy and the interaction between mind and body as cause, and effect their experiences. So when such a practitioner is “doing” another practice such as Tai Chi, Qi Gong, or Yoga they can have the same deeper awareness of that process as compared to someone else who hasn’t had the training in Reiki Jin Kei Do.
Similarly, a Reiki Jin Kei Do practitioner doing anapana sati (Mindfulness of Breathing) may experience the subtle sensations of the body at the nostrils or upper lip as the air (four elements) contacts the matter of the body (four elements) faster or clearer than someone starting new. Therefore, when a Reiki Jin Kei Do practitioner enrols to learn Vipassana, they will not be “doing” Reiki but fully aware of the practice of Vipassana and the techniques taught to them. To them Reiki is a state of heighted awareness, a state of “being” in the present moment fully engaged in the moment to moment unfolding of the reality of their mind-body as uncovered by the scanning of the body during Vipassana practice.
I always recommend Vipassana to my Reiki Jin Kei Do teachers students so they can encounter and experience the benefits of meditation in a retreat setting.
